What the valve does
Nothing about the weather here wears this part; age and use do. On a range oven lit by a glowing igniter, Viking’s service manual describes a valve with a small heater coil inside. Current flows through the oven glow-bar igniter and the valve together, and only once the igniter is hot enough to pass that current does the valve open and let gas reach the burner. Viking’s self-clean gas ranges work differently: a spark ignition module opens their valve.
Why the igniter is blamed first
On the glowing type, a weak igniter holds the valve shut or only partly open, so it looks exactly like a valve fault. The igniter fails far more often, which is why it is tested first. Why does my Viking oven igniter glow but never light?
