What the ceramic does
The spark electrode beside each burner is a metal tip held in a white ceramic body. The ceramic insulates: it keeps the pulse on the metal as far as the tip, so the spark must jump to the burner. It works only while whole and clean.
How it fails here
A crack lets the pulse escape through the ceramic; it often starts with a cap dropped onto the burner and can be almost invisible. A carbon track is slower: soot from a smoky flame settles on the ceramic, damp air wets it, and the spark burns a dark line it keeps following. Kitchens near the water in South Cove and on shaded hillsides see the damp half of that most. Either way the whole spark electrode is the part that gets replaced, never the ceramic patched. What you can do yourself
- Knobs off and the cooktop cold: lift the grate and cap, then look at the ceramic with a torch from several angles.
- Wipe it with a dry, soft cloth; no abrasive pads, no liquid on the electrode, and nothing metal against it.
- Put caps back gently; a cap dropped onto the burner is the usual way a ceramic gets cracked.
