What the blower does
On Viking’s self-clean dual-fuel ranges, the service notebook describes a cooling fan motor that feeds a steady supply of cool air during self-clean, keeping the door lock motor and the circuits around it from cooking. A separate heat-operated switch closes as the compartment warms and opens only once it has cooled again, which is why the fan can carry on after dinner is out.
How it fails
Bearings dry out, greasy dust builds on the blades, and the hush turns to a grind before the motor stops. A fan that never stops points instead at the switch meant to turn it off.
